This coin is part of the Tanzania Big Five Serengeti Proof Series which started in 2014. Originally the Big Five was a hunting term referring to the five most dangerous and difficult animals to hunt. Today it's widely used by wildlife guides and tourists as a list of must-see animals. The Big 5 are Lion, African Elephant, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and Cape Buffalo. Tanzania is one of the few African countries that are home to all five animals.
This Buffalo coin was struck in 2018 by the Mayer Mint, which is known for producing some of the world?s highest quality and creative coins. Each proof coin is one troy ounce of .999 Silver. The mintage is limited to 5,000 pieces and has a denomination of 1,000 shillings.
